okay i broke my sworn vow of getting a finished drawing done a day. and i will not be putting out a drawing today, either. but there's a good reason, i swear! i'm heading off to new york this weekend to hang with the parents and other various awesome people...

anyway. S'NOT like i haven't been drawing! i've got a buttload of sketches that i've been cleaning up, maybe i'll post that instead to prove (to myself, mostly) that i've been keeping at drawing and not being a slackface.

hello! this journal entry has two main purposes.

first, update on me. if anyone really wanted to know. work work work, also work. there's some work work work on the side, with a smattering of work work work. it's been busy, but then again, that's always been my excuse for the lack of activity and response on the folks who have been seemingly talking to a brick wall.

life in general is busy. working to pay the billz, juggling ApartmentStuffs and... drumroll please, i'm spending a lot of my at-home time on getting my website up and running! yes yes yes, i'm coding scrotumnose.com! to up my pretentious level from WTF to MEGA WTF, hooray! i'm imposing pretty stupid personal deadlines on it, so the arts will still be trickling until that's done. i have been doing a lot of sketches, though! maybe if i get around to it, i'll color them up! or maybe i'll just get lazy and put them up as scraps. dave bets on the latter.

plus, i'm getting pixelly arty thoughts. more on that.... whenever. i dunno. when things are less hectic.

and SECOND and the main reason why i'm even bothering to make an update, i spat out a really quick doodle for a new header that i had to put up. wind waker ripoff FTW. ha!

1. PENCILS AND PAPERS KILL HIS BONAR
i cannot and i mean CANNOT use traditional materials to save my life. i hate using pencils, and drawing on paper. i'm a spoiled digital boy who only knows how to draw on his tablet and his tablet alone. i have like, two or three deviations where i used pencils, and i hate them so much. they're ugly and retarded and pigeons shit on them on a daily basis. the only reason why they're still in my gallery is because i am against deleting anything from my gallery (i like to see the progression of my art over the years)

2. WHAT A RIPOFF
contrary to what any of you might think, i don't have an original style. hahahahahaha!!! no really. this is what i believe. i feel like im a series of ripoffs mishmashed together in hopes of trying to passing it off as my own style. i'll break it down. obviously, Corey Lewis (www.reyyy.com) is my biggest influence. i love his work so much, it borders on creepy. like.. ever since i read sharknife, my work has been gravitating more and more towards his style. im consciously trying not to bite his style, but it's hard. how can you NOT want to emulate it. i hope i'm doing a good enough job at keeping my style mine, though.

other very notable people include: for coloring and general photoshoppery. i learned how to use textures and overlays because of him, and lord knows i got my love for warm orangey yellowy palettes because of him (and FLCL), although i took it to a crazy stupid saturated level. hahaha!

because of her wtfawesome lines. at that point in my artistic development, i had wanted to stop drawing and just color things all the time. her in-your-face confident-ass lines just... blew my mind. how so few lines could be so powerful, it was a breath of fresh air. I DIDNT NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CHIAROSCURO IN ORDER TO MAKE LINES OMGZ

Byran Lee O Malley. he's one of the prime reasons why i decided to pick up my stylus in the first place and trek down the comicking path.. but more on that in my next point.

3. 20 BILLION YEARS TO ART PUBERTY
i didn't start drawing seriously until i was like, 20? in my last year of college. sure, i made a doodle here and there in my notebooks, but i never really dedicated myself to art until i was on my way out of school. i was kind of searching for direction, and finally decided that i would give graphic design and illustration a try. i remember the date well, it was when i joined deviantart! i joined dA specifically to become a better artist through hard work and burning vigor.

maybe half a year or so in the art game, i was ready to give up on illustration and just stick to graphic design. but then... i read a little comic called SCOTT PILGRIM'S PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE. by Bryan Lee O' Malley. and it just... floored me. ever since i read it, it has been and i believe will continue to be the best comic i have ever read. it was ALL HEART. HEART, BABY, HEART. you see, i don't have much confidence in my art-skills. but i am confident that my heart-level is strong. and seeing an all-heart comic bolstered my courage and made me wanna keep on trucking... and get better. and you know what, i think i have. definitely a long way to go, but i've made good progress i think.

4. HOMEGROWN DAVE JUTSU WITH ARTSKUUL PENISENVY
i learned how to draw by myself. everything i know now is because of me, or because of me taking cues from people i eye-doh-lize. however, i've always wanted to go to art school and get good fundamentals. i feel like i really lack that foundation. i mean... anatomy alone... gah. this makes me feel like such an art scrub in the presence of those who have had the proper... training? prep? method? i mean, i know that method is a very varied and personal approach, but knowing the groundwork can't ever hurt, s'what i think.

5. SCROTUMCOMIX = ANIME SERIES + INDIECOMIC FUSION HA!
okay, i watch a lot of anime. a lot more than you would think. and it inspires my work so much, although i consciously try to keep a distance between me and it. i make parallels - every series me and mihk (my comicking partner in crime) make are influenced by a comic and an anime series. A Perfect Ten runs parallel to FLCL and Scott Pilgrim. Juan Aswang: the Legend of Johnny B. Ghoul runs parallel to Re:Cutie Honey and Sharknife. The Ballad of Meng Francisco runs parallel to Eyeshield 21 and Peng. There i said it. im not sure if i'm making much sense. but anyway!

6. VIDEO GAMES DOOMED THIS POOR SOUL
i have to say that i stand on the same page with on this. it was all video games' fault. i wouldn't have had an art charge in the first place if it wasn't for mario 2 and megaman. i drew that shit all the friggen time when i was a kid. video games filled me with wonder and love and hopes and dreams. it fueled my imagination, and it just brimmed. i had to release somehow, and that somehow was drawing. then i got into fighting games and it was hopeless. i'd never be able to turn back from my nerdy geekdom. i'm not so into RPGs though (except for FF6 and Breath of Fire), so i feel somewhat redeemed. hahahaha!

7. IT'S NOT A RACE YOU IDIOT
i actually try to get faster and faster with each piece that i draw. as weird as it may sound. i try to see how well i can make something in a certain amount of time. i dont really know WHY honestly. i just see people churning out awesome shit and go 'oh this only took me .3249 seconds' and i go FUCK i want to be that fast too. maybe it's some sort of competitive tick in me, hahaha

8. PATRIOTISM???
i really like drawing filipino things and putting in filipino references into my work, although it's not always apparent. i just think the philippines has a wealth of culture and mythology and cool quirks that people could really get into. it's totally an untapped market that i want to tap into. oops. now you know my secret DIE NOW HRRRAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHBUTTSECKS

9. OH THOSE BEAUTIFUL MELODIES
okay everyone says this but. music is a make-or-break factor when i draw. i need to listen to certain things to draw certain things. it comPLETELY influences my mood and what comes out of my tablet. for instance, whenever i draw something Perfect Ten-related, i have to listen to the Cardigans (the Life album). and when i make juan aswang stuff, it always HAS to be Tokyo Jihen. so if you force me into a room with only kenny G playing, the only art you'll get out of me is buttsex in supermarkets. and unicorns.

OKAY! i have internets for a while, and the frame of mind to collect my thoughts.

First off, EVERYONE. JESUS. THANK YOU SO MUCH. i still can't believe that this little project that was only supposed to be a nerdy join-devID thing between me and a few of my dA friends has picked up so much steam, and ZOMG warranted a daily deviation. this is unexpected and very awesome, and i can't stress how giddy it makes me, just thinking about it.

Secondly, is AWESOME FUCKIN POSSUM. i think this thing ramped up like it did because she busted her ass and COLLECTED all these IDs, while i sat on my lazy ass (deliberately, i'm in the middle of a vacation)/ hahaha! so. delya. thank you. and all of you reading this should give her love too, if you haven't already.

hey, this ain't about pixelart skillz. it's turned into a huge community thing, no one's judging you and this isn't an exclusive club. it's just a bunch of folks that want to do something together. and for the record, it was my first (and pretty much all of the other orginators' first) try at pixel art. so. you may suprise yourself! i assure you, it will turn out a lot better than you'd think it would.

3. WHAT DID YOU USE TO MAKE IT???
Photoshop, from start to finish! although, you can use other programs if you can hack it. personally, i just did everything in photoshop.. sketched it, drew over it in a one-pixel brush, and then colored it!

in relation to my previous journal entry involving butt sorceresses and spicy chicken, i absolutely hate hate hate hate hate opening door number two in any place other than my own toilet. i will only do it under circumstances of extreme duress. like what happened earlier this week. i have been known to hold in my dook for entire outings, like weekends at the beach, short vacations, etc. one time i went to hong kong for five days and didn't open my emergency exit, not once.

WHILLLLEEEEE we're on the topic of poop, i also have to say that it is the one subject that will make me queasy, like, instantly, without fail. anything involving butt activity, really. bring on the gore, scary movies, snuff videos, all of that really sick shit, it won't get a single urp out of me, but once there's poop involved, i become a sprinkler system - powered by puke. one of my best friends was telling me about her adventures with xenical and it just made me retch. i vomited in my own mouth. you may say 'that is bullshit UTTER BULLSHIT dave, you just made a journal entry about your own poopventure.' and to that i say.... people don't mind the smell of their own farts. i mentioned last time i did this that i hate hate hate it when people touch my belly button. but that isn't all. i also hate it when people touch my collar bone. that feeling isn't normal, man. i don't care what you say. if you like touching or being touched on your collar bone, then you are an enemy of LIFE and must be shot with tranquilizer guns.

TRAIT FOURTH
cold weather is the shit, man. i love cold weather like dogs love bones. back in the philippines, i always slept with an air conditioner vent AND an electric fan blowing right at me. it's a little weird, because i am of the MUD RACES and therefore a little more used to the heat, but i can't stand hot weather at all. i'll admit, chicago has pushed my cold tolerance to the limit, and i've cursed at it a few times, but deep down inside i am full of glee. i love it when my face gets all stingy from the cold.

TRAIT FIFTH
in relation to the last trait... you know how some people are happy when it rains? i'm always ECSTATIC when it snows. it makes me happy, oh so happy. i can't wipe the grin off my face when i see snow coming down. thing is, i have to bike to the train station from work, and the snow really makes it a bitch. it's hard to ride on, and all slippy-slidy. i've crashed a few times because of it already. but. when it's coming down, i'm all giggles as i plow through the mush.

PARFAIT SIXTH
touchy feely is my name, and touchy feely is my game. i have been known as a supremely physically affectionate person. not in a lewd way, though. i give hugs like nobody's business, and like receiving them in turn. i also love giving backrubs, too. i think it relaxes me more than it relaxes the person im giving it too. there's something.... soothing and zen about administering a back massage. my mind drifts and i think about bamboo and ponds and sand gardens and shit like that. so i lose track of time, and before i know it, i've been giving a backrub for like, an hour and the person has already fallen asleep. it's kinda weird being here in the states now, though. because people are more into the whole personal space thing than they are in the philippines. that makes me sad. i'm a lot more wary about my affection now that im here in the US. i secretly want people to prove me wrong, though.
